Pyridinium-Substituted TetraphenylethyleneEntailing Alkyne Moiety: Enhancement of Photosensitizing Efficiency and Antimicrobial Activity.

Abstract
- Apart from sensing and imaging, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) are also interesting for photosensitizing. The photosensitizing behavior and bacteria-killing performance of a pyridinium-substituted tetraphenylethylene with an alkyne group ( TPE-A-Py<superscript>+</superscript>) is reported herein. Interestingly, TPE-A-Py<superscript>+</superscript> exhibits higher photosensitizing efficiency than TPE-Py<superscript>+</superscript> (without alkyne group) when I<superscript>−</superscript> was used as a counteranion. This is well explained by the fact that the Δ Ε<subscript>ST</subscript> between the excited singlet state ( S<subscript>1</subscript>) and triplet state ( T<subscript>1</subscript>) was lower for TPE-A-Py<superscript>+</superscript> than for TPE-Py<superscript>+</superscript>, according to theoretical calculations. Moreover, replacement of I<superscript>−</superscript> with other anions (PF<subscript>6</subscript><superscript>−</superscript>, N(SO<subscript>2</subscript>CF<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript><superscript>−</superscript> and BPh<subscript>4</subscript><superscript>−</superscript>) led to a decrease of photosensitizing efficiency for TPE-A-Py<superscript>+</superscript>. Notably, TPE-A-Py<superscript>+</superscript> could be used as an efficient photosensitizer to photo-inactivate ampicillin-resistant (amp<superscript>r</superscript>) E. coli at low concentration under white-light irradiation very quickly.
