Abstract

This paper explores the threats that Brexit poses for the higher education sector. These threats are: loss of research funding from EU sources; loss of students from other EU countries; the impact on the ability of the sector to hire academic staff from EU countries; and the impact on the ability of UK students to study abroad. The paper suggests ways in which these threats could be mitigated, but argues that this mitigation may be limited in the absence of an agreement on freedom of movement in the sector.
