Abstract
- Examines opposing viewpoints among Sovietologists regarding what took place in Russia after the October Revolution of 1917. Author's view that what took place was a reversion to the Russian past; Emergence under Vladimir Lenin and Vladimir Stalin of a neo-czarist order that called itself socialist; Nationalization of resources; Autocratic and absolute character of Soviet power; Declared goal of perestroika; State principle of serfdom; Creation of an aristocracy of rank; Resemblance to the repressive regime of Nicholas I in the 1830s and 1840s; Comparison between what happened in the 1980s and the reform efforts and perestroika efforts of the reforming czar in the 1860s and 1870s.
