The article examines current standards and guidelines on writing and implementing laboratory standard operating procedures (SOP) in low-resource settings and highlights some lessons learned from a neglected infectious diseases study in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It defines SOP, cites its basic principles and highlights its significance to the practice of preventive medicine.
