Abstract
- Topics of "othering" and "orientalisation", similar to those described by Edward Said in his Orientalism, can be found in many texts written by Polish-Lithuanian authors involved in the Moscovite-Lithuanian and Polish-Moscovite Wars at the end of the sixteenth and in the first two decades of the seventeenth century (especially 1577-1582 and 1605-1618). A good example of an epideictic text from the area of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth showing the Grand Duchy of Moscow from a "colonial" and "oriental" perspective is Panegyrica Apostrophe by Helias Pilgrimovius (Pol. Pielgrzymowski) published in 1583 in Krakow. The aim of this paper is to present the rhetorical structure of Pilgrimovius' text and to discuss the place of the mechanisms of "othering" in it.
