Abstract

The author discusses research published within the issue which compared oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) efficiency in permeabilized skeletal muscle fiber bundles (PmFBs) and isolated skeletal muscle mitochondria at lower levels of adenosine diphosphate (ADP). Topics discussed include decreased OXPHOS efficiency in PmFBs relative to isolated mitochondria, the implications of the findings, and imaging techniques that may improve resolution of measurement.
