Abstract

The present paper focuses broadly on changes to legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to intellectual property (IP) and agricultural biotechnology in multiple territories across the world. Specific evolutions of interest include changes to patentability requirements surrounding genetic material, the expanded availability of IP mechanisms to protect new varieties of plants, and implementations of and reforms to regulatory regimes governing biosafety for genetically modified organisms. The overall purpose of the paper is to provide a general overview of global trends, so that the reader may better navigate a shifting landscape of IP laws and regulatory requirements related to agricultural biotechnology innovation.
