Abstract

This paper focuses on a compact frequency switchable antenna for ultra wide band applications. The proposed antenna design consists of a rectangular monopole antenna with asymmetric cross slot and similar slot as a conductor on reverse plane, which achieves a wide band of 6.5-14.7 GHz with 77.3 % of fractional bandwidth. Additional resonances are excited and much wider impedance bandwidth is produced, especially at higher band by cutting an asymmetric cross slot on patch and a same slot as a conductor on the ground plane. Moreover, a RF p-i-n diode is diagonally positioned in an asymmetric cross slot on patch that achieves a feature of frequency re-configurability. A compactness of 67.3 % is achieved as compared to the normal re-configurable patch antenna. Simulated and measured results are used to demonstrate the performances of the antenna. The proposed design technique significantly enhances the system capability to operate with multiple operating frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
