Abstract

An essay is presented that is excerpted from the book "Colored Travelers: Mobility and the Fight for Citizenship Before the Civil War," by Elizabeth Stordeur Pryor. Topics include the etymology of the racial slur "n**ger," the self-appropriation of the slur by African Americans, and the influence of the literary character Jim Crow in relation to white racism.
