Abstract
- The article presents a survey of 19th-century papers' manufacture and terminology based on the period's sources. It references studies on the subject made by Philip Gaskell in 1972, and Cathleen A. Baker in 2010. Topics discussed include the 18th-century terminology's accepted lack of precision that allows descriptive bibliography, the changes effected by the paper-making machine in the 19th century, and the old terminology's much later use only for general convenience by mid-20th century.
