Abstract

In its first part the study discusses the paradox of the subject conceived as one of the main traps confronting contemporary critical theory. A generator of the paradox is the ambivalence of the „freedom-power“ relation in Foucault. This ambivalence could be overcome through recourse to Nietzsche. Following Paul Patton's reconstructive strategy, the article shows that at a basic level „freedom“ and „power“ are synonymous for Nietzsche. If we make use of Patton's distinction between „power to“ and „power over“, where „power to“ means the subject's force, might, power to re-valuate and transform certain dependences, then not only is it true that freedom is power (first axiom), but the paradox of the subject disappears. In this case the subject is nothing but a passing coordinating centre of her/his/their „own“ immanent freedom and power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
