Abstract

The authors discuss the reasons why they believe that increased research investments are an integral step in helping reduce the public health burden of kidney disease as of 2016, and it mentions how chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing public health problem in the U.S. According to the article, more than 20 million Americans have CKD which can lead to end-stage renal disease. U.S. federal expenditures for kidney disease treatment are examined, along with CKD treatment costs.
