Abstract

The article focuses on the mission of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to support the constitutional responsibilities and to help improve the performance and the accountability of the federal government in the U.S. It highlights the debate between the Federal Reserve (Fed) and the Congress over the utility of GAO audits. It stresses the importance of auditing Fed activities such as foreign financial transactions, monetary policy issues and the disclosure of confidential information.
