Abstract

The straightforward synthesis of the cationic, purely organometallic Ni<superscript>I</superscript> salt [Ni(cod)<subscript>2</subscript>]+[Al(ORF)<subscript>4</subscript>]<superscript>-</superscript> was realized through a reaction between [Ni(cod)<subscript>2</subscript>] and Ag[Al(OR<superscript>F</superscript>)<subscript>4</subscript>] (cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene). Crystal-structure analysis and EPR, XANES, and cyclic voltammetry studies confirmed the presence of a homoleptic Ni<superscript>I</superscript> olefin complex. Weak interactions between the metal center, the ligands, and the anion provide a good starting material for further cationic Ni<superscript>I</superscript> complexes.
