Science must prepare for impact.

The article discusses the role of scientists in demonstrating the societal impact of scientific research. According to the author, many early-career scientists only have experience in academia, making it difficult for them to understand the needs of the industry and policy sectors. It is suggested that academic performance metrics discourage scientists from exploring nonlinear career tracks or conducting interdisciplinary research.
