Abstract

This article discusses the construction of Canada's modern culture and national identity through comic superhero Captain Canuck. The release of "Captain Canuck" in 1975 was the first Canadian comic book success since the collapse of the Second World War comic book industry. Description of Captain Canuck's suit is presented. The comic superhero is more than a comic book relic it is a cultural aftifact in Canada. He represents popular cultural characteristics, myths, symbols, and stereotypes that legitimized the national identity and reinforced the conception of Canada as a peaceable kingdom. The Canadian government has incorporated Captain Canuck as a national icon valuable for fostering national awareness and pride.
