Abstract

The article examines the interaction between Argentine political, scientific, and social entities that permitted the recognition of Chagas' disease as endemic in Argentina during the early 20th century, particularly the relationship between Argentine public health agenda changes and Argentine national identity. It discusses the significance of Argentine physician Salvador Mazza, the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, and the Argentine agency the National Department of Hygiene (DNH). According to the article, Chagas' disease was discovered by Brazilian physician Carlos Chagas in 1909.
