Abstract

Pakistan after becoming an independent nation started torturing the minorities and Punjabis, indulged in the exploitation of all other nationalities; hence in 1971, East Pakistan revolted against the oppression and seceded from Pakistan. Several other nationalities, especially the Baluchis, Sindhis and Pathans, are also against the central government and made efforts to become independent. Besides these, there are quite a few other small nationalities that also yearn to break away from Pakistan. The Muhajirs (Urdu speakers), Hindkowans, Saraikis and Chitralis also demand more autonomy as they all claim that the Punjabis are exploiting them and they are considered second-class citizens. The Pakistan government must treat all citizens of the country equally, and feelings of exploitation must end. Different rulers exploited Islam to legitimise their rule. General Zia-ul-Haq, who overthrew and hanged Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, made vociferous efforts about promulgation of Sharia laws in the country. Fundamentalism, extremism and terrorism enhanced manifold during his regime. He encouraged a madrassa culture, and madrassas became jihadi factories, where extremists, terrorists and suicide bombers were produced. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) emerged as the most powerful terrorist organisation, which shot down a helicopter carrying a few ambassadors of foreign countries accredited to Pakistan. The spokesman of the TTP claimed that the outfit wanted to kill Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The founder of Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was a Shia and about 30-35 million people in Pakistan are Shias, but as fundamentalism has grown, a few extremist Sunni organisations, like the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jundullah, massacred many Shias. The Shias have also constituted a few organisations to counter the Sunnis. Hence the divide between both sects has augmented. There is rampant corruption, illiteracy and poverty in the country. Pakistan must try to improve the living conditions of the poor masses, especially of women. Pakistan possesses nuclear warheads, and radicalism is increasing. Hence the whole world is worried that the nuclear warheads may fall in the hands of terrorist organisations. Sometimes back, the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed that they are very near procuring nuclear warheads from Pakistan. The Pakistan government may not hand over nuclear weapons to terrorists, but extremists can procure these through some rogue employees. The Pakistani army should stop meddling in the internal affairs of the country, and it must give a chance to the civilian government to rule the nation. Under the civilian government, democratic institutions, like political parties, the parliament, the judiciary and the press, would strengthen themselves. The despicable Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) should stop sponsoring terrorist activities and drug smuggling in India, Afghanistan and other places. It is harming peace and tranquillity in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
