Abstract

Failure by internal erosion is produced by the transport of soil particles within a soil stratum, at the interface of soil strata, or at the interface between the soil and the structure. Increasing of flood risks due to global climatic changes in the last 20 years have a large negative influence on the stability of protective dykes or opening of deep excavation pits in Quarternary soils with high ground water level. Hydrostatic or hydrodynamic load of ground water on soil particles finally results in progressive erosion, leading to collapse of the soil structure. Research at the Department of Geotechnics was focused on problems connected with filtration stability of non-cohesive soils in Slovak region. The paper present the results of laboratory tests verified in field conditions. The results were also compared with other international research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
