Abstract

The article presents a tribute to college teacher of UNESCO Institute for Education, Wolfgang Mitter. Born in 1927 in the then German-speaking part of what is now the Czech Republic, Mitter completed his schooling in Germany, studied at the University of Mainz in Germany, took a doctorate at the Free University of Berlin, Germany on the subject of the Russian historian M.N. Karamzin. After teaching for several years at a gymnasium, he entered the university world, becoming Professor of General and Comparative Education at the Teachers' College in L¨neburg, Germany and at the same time a lecturer in comparative education at the University of Hamburg. In 1972 he was appointed Head of the Department of General and Comparative Education at the German Institute for International Educational Research at Frankfurt, Germany, of which he also served two periods as Director. Mitter has a long-standing association with the UNESCO Institute for Education and with the journal "International Review of Education," of which he was co-editor between 1972 and 1981, and to which he has often contributed. He has also served on the editorial board of the journal and as deputy representative of Germany on the governing board of the UNESCO Institute. In both of these roles his wise counsel and wide-ranging knowledge of the educational field have been greatly valued.
