Abstract

In two short years, Michael Sifton has built Osprey Media Group Inc. into an Ontario community newspaper giant serving what collectively amounts to the country's fourth largest consumer market. In the last two years, Sifton has presided over Osprey's ambitious leap into the Ontario newspaper business, quietly amassing an impressive collection of community newspapers that serve what now amounts to the nation's fourth largest consumer market, after big cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Since its creation in 2001, the Markham, Ontario-based holding company has spent over $413 million to purchase venerable institutions like The Kingston Whig-Standard and The Standard of St. Catharines-Niagara, along with a host of other papers like 'The Sudbury Star,' 'The Peterborough Examiner' and 'The Barrie Examiner.'
