Abstract

This article focuses on the course requirements for sociology majors accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. The modal number of semester hours required is from 28 to 34, and it is evident that the requirements ay the majority of schools range from 21 to 34 hours. Assuming that courses are typically equivalent to three credit hours each, it follows that most schools require from seven to eleven courses of their sociology majors. Semester hour requirements are highest in Roman Catholic schools, followed by public institutions, non-Catholic denominational schools and private nondenominational schools. The variable of size seems to be inconsistently related to the number of hours required for the major. The number of credit hours required is not clearly vital as the degree to which and the ways in which the content of the major program is defined. In a few schools students could choose between two or more courses in meeting a specific requirement. In such cases, all alternatives were coded, and this produces a very slight exaggeration of the picture of requirements. Social problems are required in three times as many programs. Social problems can be analyzed sociologically, just as any manifestation of social behavior can.
