Abstract

This article focuses on pre-match rituals practiced by Rugby football players. Rugby football games are full of these rituals. Individual idiosyncrasies that are rarely seen but often spoken about, they can be as simple as putting the right boot on first or only entering sheds five minutes before warm-up. Television cameras these days take public into rooms but they fail to give the whole story. Back in 1979, 60 Minutes cameras trailed Western Suburbs Magpies and caught on film what has since become one of the most infamous dressing-room scenes in rugby league—chaotic face slapping which rocked the game.
