Abstract

Processes of language standardization are discussed in the context of the standardization of German. Special attention is paid to the social aspects of normalization and codification. The contact with other standard languages, especially French, English, Italian, and Latin, is discussed with respect to its impact on the standardization of German. In recent times, the development of the standard language has taken somewhat different paths in the various German-speaking countries. One aspect discussed in this paper is language loyalty. In this connection some observations are reported on the changing situation of local dialects, city dialects, youth registers, and languages for special purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
