Abstract

The use of photovoltaic systems on board of ocean-going ships is a goal, which has to be achieved forthcoming years, as an option for decreasing the vessel's greenhouse gas emissions, by reducing the fossil fuels consumption. As per IMO (International Maritime Organization) 2014 Study, the international shipping emitted 796 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in 2012, representing 2.2% of the global emissions of CO<subscript>2</subscript>. This paper is dealing with the technical specifications of the PV plants, in order to be compatible with the specific marine environmental conditions, as strong winds, high humidity, storms, salt, corrosion, shading and limited installation area. A brief description of the ship's basic electrical grid sketch and of its main components is presented and the PV systems and solar cells technologies are described, highlighting the advantages and the disadvantages of each for on board of oceangoing vessels implementation.
