Abstract

The article focuses on French philosopher and historian Elie Halévy and highlights the importance of his political engagement, his role as an analyst of democracy, and his influence among historians and philosophers of liberalism and democracy in the 20th century. It mentions his influence on French historian, philosopher, sociologist, and author Raymond Aron and French historian François Furet and discusses the content and reception of his book of essays entitled "The Era of Tyrannies" in which he talks about the rise of totalitarianism and the power of democracy. His personal engagement during the Dreyfus Affair in France, which concerned the treason trial and subsequent exoneration of French officer Alfred Dreyfus, and his experience of World War I are also mentioned.
