Abstract
- The population is ageing, and there are now 11 million adults aged 65 years and over living in the UK (Office for National Statistics, 2013). Most older people live in their own homes, and less than half a million (405 000) live in care homes (LaingBuisson, 2014). Every year, around 30% of older adults living in the community fall at least once (Gillespie et al, 2012). This means that 3.18 million older people fall every year at home. This article uses a case history approach to illustrate how health professionals can identify and treat modifiable risk factors for falls and reduce the risk of harm when risks remain.
