Abstract

Discusses the political conditions in Beijing, China. Power and problems of succession; Prime minister Chou En-lai's determination to curb the volatile radicals, downgrade the predominance of the army and reestablish experienced civilian authority capable of managing the country; Introduction of rational rules and regulations into the economic sphere in order to discourage frenetic development episodes which nearly wrecked China in the late 1950; Rehabilitation of officials who had been dismissed during the Cultural Revolution.
