Abstract: We report the chromosomal assignment on chromosome arm 16p of a cDNA clone isolated through its expression in mature kidney and lack of expression in several Wilms tumors. DNA sequencing and analysis of the pattern of RNA expression in different tissues identified this clone as a uromodulin (Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein, uromucoid; UMOD) sequence. By hybridizing this clone to somatic cell hybrids carrying different human chromosomes or segments of chromosome 16, the gene for UMOD was localized to 16p13.11.
