Abstract
- We evaluated the hearing results after ossicular reconstruction in tympanoplasty at our Department. The results obtained with different methods and materials were compared. We reviewed the operations during the last 9 years; in 231 procedures reconstruction of the sound transfer mechanism was attempted. Data collected were: age, sex, pure tone audiometry, diagnosis, type of operation, state of the stapes, method and material used in reconstruction, length of follow-up and complications. Success was defined as air-bone gap closure to within 20 dB. A statistical study, both descriptive and analytical, identified the state of the middle ear mucosa and the presence of the stapes arch as significant factors influencing the prognosis of ossicular reconstruction.
