Abstract

We evaluated the hearing results after ossicular reconstruction in tympanoplasty at our Department. The results obtained with different methods and materials were compared. We reviewed the operations during the last 9 years; in 231 procedures reconstruction of the sound transfer mechanism was attempted. Data collected were: age, sex, pure tone audiometry, diagnosis, type of operation, state of the stapes, method and material used in reconstruction, length of follow-up and complications. Success was defined as air-bone gap closure to within 20 dB. A statistical study, both descriptive and analytical, identified the state of the middle ear mucosa and the presence of the stapes arch as significant factors influencing the prognosis of ossicular reconstruction.
