Abstract

Since the advent of pacemakers in 1958, growing application has led to an increasing complexity in their design and an attendant potential for more problems in use and in understanding their function. The selection of a current pulse generator with its wide functional capabilities should now be dependent upon its ability to normalize both mechanical and electrical functions of the heart and to ensure an adequate protection against dysfunction created by the patient's heart or the electronics of the pacemaker. Such an accomplishment will allow selection of the proper pace for the patient.
