Abstract
- Extubation represents an essential component of airway management. While being a common procedure in anesthesiology and critical care medicine, it is accompanied by a significant risk of morbidity and mortality. Safe extubation requires considerable skills, risk stratification and advanced planning. It is important to emphasize that intentional extubation is always an elective procedure, and as such should only be executed when conditions are optimal. The purpose of this review is to discuss the complications associated with planned extubation in the adult patient, including risk factors and management strategies, mainly focusing on the postoperative setting.<br /> (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc.
