Chemical carcinogenesis: an overview.

A brief review is presented of some types of chemical carcinogens and their metabolic activation to DNA-binding intermediates, and of the influence of modifiers of carcinogenesis on the probability of tumor development. The relationship between human exposure to one group of carcinogens--the tobacco specific nitrosamines--and the development of tobacco-related cancers is discussed.
