Abstract

para -Substitution reactions on C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>5</subscript> rings of Lewis acids have been exploited to achieve triply substituted derivatives. The reaction of B(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>5</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> with P(SiMe <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> ultimately affords the Lewis acid B(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>4</subscript> P(SiMe <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> 1. This species binds Lewis bases affording the adducts LB(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>4</subscript> P(SiMe <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> (L = MeCN 2, OPEt <subscript>3</subscript> 3, PMe <subscript>3</subscript> 4, PBu <subscript>3</subscript> 5) and reacts with LiMe to give the salt [Li][MeB(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>4</subscript> P(SiMe <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> ]·3THF 6. It also reacts with H <subscript>2</subscript> O to give (L)B(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>4</subscript> PH <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> (L = H <subscript>2</subscript> O 7, MeCN 8). In an analogous fashion, [(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>5</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> PF][B(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>5</subscript> ) <subscript>4</subscript> ] was converted to [FP(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>4</subscript> P(SiMe <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> ] [B(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>5</subscript> ) <subscript>4</subscript> ] 9 and subsequently to [(MeO)P(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>4</subscript> PH <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> ][B(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>5</subscript> ) <subscript>4</subscript> ] 10.
