Abstract

Three new cyano-bridged Fe <superscript>II</superscript> -Mo <superscript>III</superscript> complexes assembled from the [Mo <superscript>III</superscript> (CN) <subscript>7</subscript> ] <superscript>4-</superscript> unit, Fe <superscript>II</superscript> ions, and three pentadentate N <subscript>3</subscript> O <subscript>2</subscript> ligands, namely {[Fe <subscript>2</subscript> H <subscript>3</subscript> (dapab) <subscript>2</subscript> ][Mo(CN) <subscript>6</subscript> ]} <subscript> n </subscript> ·2H <subscript>2</subscript> O·3.5MeCN ( 1 ), [Fe(H <subscript>2</subscript> dapb)(H <subscript>2</subscript> O)][Fe(Hdapb)(H <subscript>2</subscript> O)][Mo(CN) <subscript>6</subscript> ]·4H <subscript>2</subscript> O·3MeCN ( 2 ), and [Fe(H <subscript>2</subscript> dapba)(H <subscript>2</subscript> O)] <subscript>2</subscript> [Mo(CN) <subscript>7</subscript> ]·6H <subscript>2</subscript> O ( 3 ) (H <subscript>2</subscript> dapab = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(2-aminobenzoylhydrazone), H <subscript>2</subscript> dapb = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(benzoylhydrazone), H <subscript>2</subscript> dapba = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(4-aminobenzoylhydrazone)), have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structure analyses suggest that complex 1 contains a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure where two Fe <superscript>II</superscript> ions are bridged by the in situ generated [Mo <superscript>III</superscript> (CN) <subscript>6</subscript> ] <superscript>3-</superscript> unit through two trans -cyanide groups into trinuclear Fe <subscript>2</subscript> <superscript>II</superscript> Mo <superscript>III</superscript> clusters that are further linked by the amino of the ligand into an infinite chain. Complexes 2 and 3 are cyano-bridged Fe <subscript>2</subscript> <superscript>II</superscript> Mo <superscript>III</superscript> trinuclear clusters with two Fe <superscript>II</superscript> ions connected by the [Mo <superscript>III</superscript> (CN) <subscript>6</subscript> ] <superscript>3-</superscript> and [Mo <superscript>III</superscript> (CN) <subscript>7</subscript> ] <superscript>4-</superscript> units, respectively. Direct current magnetic studies confirmed the ferromagnetic interactions between the cyano-bridged Fe <superscript>II</superscript> and Mo <superscript>III</superscript> centers and significant easy-axis magnetic anisotropy for all three complexes. Furthermore, complexes 1-3 exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under a zero dc field, with relaxation barriers of 42.3, 21.6, and 14.4 K, respectively, making them the first examples of cyano-bridged Fe <superscript>II</superscript> -Mo <superscript>III</superscript> single-molecule magnets.
