Abstract

Abstract: Of the 21% of the US population with tinnitus, between 3% and 6% develop tinnitus distress, a sudden, traumatic, and severe emotional response to tinnitus. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective therapy for reducing the initial and secondary emotional stresses caused by tinnitus distress. The skills taught in CBT lead to habituation and desensitization, providing relief for the patient. This article describes tinnitus distress, CBT, and resources that clinicians can use immediately in their practices.<br /> (Copyright © 2023 American Academy of Physician Associates.)
