Abstract

Three compounds based on Ge-V-O clusters were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-Vis, XRD, ESR, elemental analysis and X-ray crystal structural analysis. Both [Cd(phen)(en)] <subscript>2</subscript> [Cd <subscript>2</subscript> (phen) <subscript>2</subscript> V <subscript>12</subscript> O <subscript>40</subscript> Ge <subscript>8</subscript> (OH) <subscript>8</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O)]∙12.5H <subscript>2</subscript> O ( 1 ) and [Cd(DETA)] <subscript>2</subscript> [Cd(DETA) <subscript>2</subscript> ] <subscript>0.5</subscript> [Cd <subscript>2</subscript> (phen) <subscript>2</subscript> V <subscript>12</subscript> O <subscript>41</subscript> Ge <subscript>8</subscript> (OH) <subscript>7</subscript> (0.5H <subscript>2</subscript> O)]∙7.5H <subscript>2</subscript> O ( 2 ) (1,10-phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, en = ethylenediamine, DETA = diethylenetriamine) are the first Ge-V-O cluster compounds containing aromatic organic ligands. Compound 1 is the first dimer of Ge-V-O clusters, which is linked by a double bridge of two [Cd(phen)(en)] <superscript>2+</superscript> . Compound 2 exhibits an unprecedented 1-D chain structure formed by Ge-V-O clusters and [Cd <subscript>2</subscript> (DETA) <subscript>2</subscript> ] <superscript>4+</superscript> transition metal complexes (TMCs). [Cd(en) <subscript>3</subscript> ]{[Cd(η <subscript>2</subscript> -en) <subscript>2</subscript> ] <subscript>3</subscript> [Cd(η <subscript>2</subscript> -en)(η <subscript>2</subscript> -μ <subscript>2</subscript> -en)(η <subscript>2</subscript> -en)Cd][Ge <subscript>6</subscript> V <subscript>15</subscript> O <subscript>48</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O)]}∙5.5H <subscript>2</subscript> O ( 3 ) is a novel 3-D structure which is constructed from [Ge <subscript>6</subscript> V <subscript>15</subscript> O <subscript>48</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O)] <superscript>12-</superscript> and four different types of TMCs. We also synthesized [Zn <subscript>2</subscript> (enMe) <subscript>3</subscript> ][Zn(enMe)] <subscript>2</subscript> [Zn(enMe) <subscript>2</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O)] <subscript>2</subscript> [Ge <subscript>6</subscript> V <subscript>15</subscript> O <subscript>48</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O)]∙3H <subscript>2</subscript> O ( 4 ) and [Cd(en) <subscript>2</subscript> ] <subscript>2</subscript> {H <subscript>8</subscript> [Cd(en)] <subscript>2</subscript> Ge <subscript>8</subscript> V <subscript>12</subscript> O <subscript>48</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O)}∙6H <subscript>2</subscript> O ( 5 ) (enMe = 1,2-propanediamine), which have been reported previously. In addition, the catalytic properties of these five compounds for styrene epoxidation have been assessed.
