Abstract

Low-temperature IR and NMR studies combined with DFT calculations revealed the mechanistic complexity of apparently simple reactions between Mn(I) complex fac -[(dppm)Mn(CO) <subscript>3</subscript> H] and Lewis acids (LA = Ph <subscript>3</subscript> C <superscript>+</superscript> , B(C <subscript>6</subscript> F <subscript>5</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> ) involving the formation of so-far elusive meridional hydride species mer -[(dppm)Mn(CO) <subscript>3</subscript> H⋯LA] and unusual dearomatization of the Ph <subscript>3</subscript> C <superscript>+</superscript> cation upon hydride transfer.
