Abstract

Competing Interests: KGC declares salary support to serve as US Agency for International Development (USAID) senior TB scientific advisor through an Inter-governmental Personnel Act award between Emory University and the USAID. FN and AZ acknowledge support from the EU European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership-funded Pan-African Network for Rapid Research, Response, Relief and Preparedness for infectious diseases epidemics (PANDORA-ID-NET), Central African Network on Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and Malaria (CANTAM-3), and East African Consortium for Clinical Research (EACCR3) programmes. AZ is in receipt of a UK National Institutes for Health Research Senior Investigator award and is a Mahathir Foundation Science Award and Pascoal Mocumbi Prize laureate.
