Abstract

A novel three-dimensional Cd <superscript>II</superscript> coordination polymer, namely, poly[[(μ <subscript>3</subscript> -benzene-1,4-diacetato)(μ <subscript>2</subscript> -benzene-1,4-diacetato)bis{μ <subscript>2</subscript> -bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl]methanone}dicadmium(II)] tetartohydrate], {[Cd(C <subscript>10</subscript> H <subscript>8</subscript> O <subscript>4</subscript> )(C <subscript>21</subscript> H <subscript>18</subscript> N <subscript>4</subscript> O)]·0.25H <subscript>2</subscript> O} <subscript>n</subscript> or {[Cd(PBEA)(MIPMO)]·0.25H <subscript>2</subscript> O} <subscript>n</subscript> , (I), was synthesized by the hydrothermal method using benzene-1,4-diacetic acid (H <subscript>2</subscript> PBEA), bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl]methanone (MIPMO) and Cd(NO <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> ·6H <subscript>2</subscript> O. The title compound was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, and exhibits a three-dimensional pillar-layer framework based on Cd <superscript>II</superscript> -PBEA layers and MIPMO pillars, which can be simplified into a pcu topological network. The title compound displays a highly selective and sensitive sensing for Fe <superscript>3+</superscript> ions in aqueous solution. In addition, it displays a high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in water under UV light irradiation.
