Abstract: Irwin Fridovich, the discoverer of superoxide dismutase, took the opportunity in this invited paper to address the important question, "Can the superoxide radical exert deleterious effects independent of participating with H <subscript>2</subscript> O <subscript>2</subscript> in the production of the hydroxyl radical?" The affirmative answer that he reached was correct although subsequent research on peroxynitrite has provided more complexity.<br /> (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)
