Abstract

Catheter ablation represents the primary treatment for most arrhythmias. The effectiveness of catheter ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation is superior to drug therapy. Therefore, catheter ablation has been established as an increasingly common procedure in clinical routine. In this context, the electrical isolation of the pulmonary veins (PVI) constitutes the cornerstone of the interventional therapy of paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation. This article describes the procedure of pulmonary vein isolation utilizing radiofrequency point-by-point ablation. It shall be a practical guide for the staff in the electrophysiological laboratory. This article continues a series of manuscripts focusing on interventional electrophysiology topics in the course of EP (electrophysiology) training. This article describes the procedure of pulmonary vein isolation utilizing radiofrequency point-by-point ablation.
