Abstract

Reactions of [Ru(NO)Cl <subscript>5</subscript> ] <superscript>2-</superscript> with pseudotrivacant B-α-[XW <subscript>9</subscript> O <subscript>33</subscript> ] <superscript>9-</superscript> (X = As <superscript>III</superscript> , Sb <superscript>III</superscript> ) at 160 °C result in the rearrangement of polyoxometalate backbones into {XM <subscript>18</subscript> } structures. In the case of arsenic, oxidation of As <superscript>III</superscript> to As <superscript>V</superscript> takes place with the formation of a mixture of plenary and monosubstituted Dawson [As <subscript>2</subscript> W <subscript>18</subscript> O <subscript>62</subscript> ] <superscript>6-</superscript> and [As <subscript>2</subscript> W <subscript>17</subscript> Ru(NO)O <subscript>61</subscript> ] <superscript>7-</superscript> anions, of which the latter was isolated as Me <subscript>2</subscript> NH <subscript>2</subscript> <superscript>+</superscript> (DMA-1a and DMA-1b) and Bu <subscript>4</subscript> N <superscript>+</superscript> (Bu <subscript>4</subscript> N-1) salts and fully characterized. Both α <subscript>1</subscript> and α <subscript>2</subscript> isomers of [As <subscript>2</subscript> W <subscript>17</subscript> Ru(NO)O <subscript>61</subscript> ] <superscript>7-</superscript> were present in the reaction mixture; pure [α <subscript>2</subscript> -As <subscript>2</subscript> W <subscript>17</subscript> Ru(NO)O <subscript>61</subscript> ] <superscript>7-</superscript> was isolated as the Bu <subscript>4</subscript> N <superscript>+</superscript> salt. In the case of antimony, [SbW <subscript>9</subscript> O <subscript>33</subscript> ] <superscript>9-</superscript> is converted into a mixture of [SbW <subscript>18</subscript> O <subscript>60</subscript> ] <superscript>9-</superscript> and [SbW <subscript>17</subscript> {Ru(NO)}O <subscript>59</subscript> ] <superscript>10-</superscript> . The formation of trisubstituted [SbW <subscript>15</subscript> {Ru(NO)} <subscript>3</subscript> O <subscript>57</subscript> ] <superscript>12-</superscript> as a minor byproduct was detected by HPLC-ICP-AES. The monosubstituted [SbW <subscript>17</subscript> {Ru(NO)}O <subscript>59</subscript> ] <superscript>10-</superscript> anion was isolated as DMAH <superscript>+</superscript> (DMA-2) and mixed inorganic cation (CsKNa-2) salts and characterized by XRD, HPLC-ICP-AES, EA and TGA techniques. X-ray analysis shows the presence of the {Ru(NO)}-group in the 6-membered ("equatorial") belt of the Sb-free hemisphere. The experimental findings were confirmed and interpreted by means of quantum chemical calculations.
