Abstract

Effective activation of CO <subscript>2</subscript> is a prerequisite for efficient utilization of CO <subscript>2</subscript> in organic synthesis. Precisely controlling the interfacial events of solids shows potential for activation. Herein, defect-enriched CeO <subscript>2</subscript> with constructed interfacial frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs, two adjacent Ce <superscript>3+</superscript> ···O <superscript>2-</superscript> ) effectively activates CO <subscript>2</subscript> via the interactions between C/Lewis basic lattice O <superscript>2-</superscript> and the two O atoms in CO <subscript>2</subscript> /two adjacent Lewis acidic Ce <superscript>3+</superscript> ions. Selective cyclic carbonate production from a catalytically tandem protocol of olefins and CO <subscript>2</subscript> is used to demonstrate FLP-inspired CO <subscript>2</subscript> activation.
