Abstract

The Danish Medicines Agency recommends routine controls of liver enzymes in patients, who are treated with statins in order to prevent liver injury. In this review, much evidence showing that severe drug-induced hepatic injury is very rarely associated with statins is presented. No data support, that routine control of blood liver enzymes will improve prevention or detection of statin-induced liver injury. Furthermore, recent studies show, that statins are safe and may even have beneficial effects in chronic liver disease. In future revision of the Danish Medicines Agency recommendations, these new findings should be taken into consideration.
