Abstract
- High-temperature trifluoromethylation of isolated-pentagon-rule (IPR) fullerene C <subscript>92</subscript> chlorination products followed by HPLC separation of C <subscript>92</subscript> (CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>n</subscript> derivatives resulted in the isolation and X-ray structural characterization of IPR C <subscript>92</subscript> (38)(CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>18</subscript> and non-classical C <subscript>92</subscript> (NC)(CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>22</subscript> . The formation of C <subscript>92</subscript> (38)(CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>18</subscript> as the highest CF <subscript>3</subscript> derivative of the known isomer C <subscript>92</subscript> (38) can be expected. The formation of C <subscript>92</subscript> (NC)(CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>22</subscript> was interpreted as chlorination-promoted cage transformation of C <subscript>92</subscript> (38) followed by trifluoromethylation of non-classical C <subscript>92</subscript> (NC) chloride. Noticeably, C <subscript>92</subscript> (NC)(CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>22</subscript> shows the highest degree of trifluoromethylation among all known CF <subscript>3</subscript> derivatives of fullerenes. The addition patterns of C <subscript>92</subscript> (38)(CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>18</subscript> and C <subscript>92</subscript> (NC)(CF <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>22</subscript> are discussed and compared to the chlorination patterns of C <subscript>92</subscript> (38)Cl <subscript>n</subscript> compounds.<br /> (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
