Abstract

Trichlorosilylated tetrelides [(Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>3</subscript> E] <superscript>-</superscript> have been prepared by adding 1 equiv of a soluble Cl <superscript>-</superscript> salt to (Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>4</subscript> Si (E=Si) or 4 Si <subscript>2</subscript> Cl <subscript>6</subscript> /GeCl <subscript>4</subscript> (E=Ge). To assess their donor qualities, the anions [(Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>3</subscript> E] <superscript>-</superscript> (E=C, Si, Ge) have been treated with BCl <subscript>3</subscript> , AlCl <subscript>3</subscript> , and GaCl <subscript>3</subscript> . Both BCl <subscript>3</subscript> and GaCl <subscript>3</subscript> give 1:1 adducts with the anionic centers. AlCl <subscript>3</subscript> leads to Cl <superscript>-</superscript> abstraction from [(Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>3</subscript> E] <superscript>-</superscript> with formation of (Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>4</subscript> E (E=Si or Ge). (Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>4</subscript> Ge is cleanly converted to the perhydrogenated (H <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>4</subscript> Ge by use of Li[AlH <subscript>4</subscript> ]. Another case of Cl <superscript>-</superscript> abstraction was observed for [(Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>3</subscript> Ge⋅GaCl <subscript>3</subscript> ] <superscript>-</superscript> , which reacts with GaCl <subscript>3</subscript> to afford the neutral dimer [(Cl <subscript>3</subscript> Si) <subscript>3</subscript> Ge-GaCl <subscript>2</subscript> ] <subscript>2</subscript> .<br /> (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
