Abstract

Two structurally intriguing dysprosium(III)-substituted polyoxometalates, [Dy <subscript>6</subscript> (ampH) <subscript>4</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O) <subscript>23</subscript> (ampH <subscript>2</subscript> )(PW <subscript>11</subscript> O <subscript>39</subscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> ] (1) and [Dy <subscript>9</subscript> (CO <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> (ampH) <subscript>2</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O) <subscript>12</subscript> (PW <subscript>10</subscript> O <subscript>37</subscript> ) <subscript>6</subscript> ] <superscript>35-</superscript> (2), are assembled by the same precursor under different pH conditions. The structure of 1 contains an octahedral {Dy <subscript>6</subscript> (ampH) <subscript>4</subscript> } core, and a unique windmill-type {Dy <subscript>9</subscript> (CO <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> (ampH) <subscript>2</subscript> } for 2. Single-molecule magnet behavior is observed for 2 with a thermally activated energy barrier of 56 K and no appreciable quantum tunneling of magnetization under zero field.
