Abstract

The novel binary P <subscript>4</subscript> analogue (Ge <subscript>2</subscript> P <subscript>2</subscript> ) <superscript>2-</superscript> proved to be a suitable precursor for heteroatomic cluster synthesis. Over time in solution, it rearranges to form (Ge <subscript>7</subscript> P <subscript>2</subscript> ) <superscript>2-</superscript> , as shown by NMR studies and X-ray diffraction. Reactions of (Ge <subscript>2</subscript> P <subscript>2</subscript> ) <superscript>2-</superscript> with CdPh <subscript>2</subscript> afford [K(crypt-222)] <subscript>3</subscript> [Cd <subscript>3</subscript> (Ge <subscript>3</subscript> P) <subscript>3</subscript> ], containing an unprecedented ternary cluster anion with a triangular Cd <subscript>3</subscript> moiety.
