Abstract

Herein, we show the controlled generation of multi-component libraries based on the [MoS <subscript>2</subscript> O <subscript>2</subscript> ] <superscript>2+</superscript> /Mo <superscript>VI</superscript> O <subscript>4</subscript> <superscript>2-</superscript> /Se <superscript>IV</superscript> O <subscript>3</subscript> <superscript>2-</superscript> /C <subscript>4</subscript> O <subscript>4</subscript> <superscript>2-</superscript> system leading to the formation of a whole new family of nanosized molecular chalcoxides, {Se <subscript>8</subscript> Mo <subscript>36</subscript> } 1, {Se <subscript>8</subscript> Mo <subscript>40</subscript> } 2, {Se <subscript>8</subscript> Mo <subscript>56</subscript> } 3, {Se <subscript>20</subscript> Mo <subscript>56</subscript> } 4 and {Se <subscript>26</subscript> Mo <subscript>68</subscript> } 5, of the general formula {(MoO <subscript>2</subscript> S <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>a</subscript> (OH) <subscript>b</subscript> (Se <superscript>IV</superscript> O <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>c</subscript> (C <subscript>4</subscript> O <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>d</subscript> (MoO <subscript>7</subscript> ) <subscript>e</subscript> } <superscript>n-</superscript> , where a, b, c, d, e, n = [16, 20, 8, 6, 2, 20] for 1, [18, 24, 8, 6, 2, 20] for 2, [24, 32, 8, 8, 4, 24] for 3, [28, 32, 20, 8, 0, 32] for 4 and [34, 36, 26, 8, 0, 36] for 5. The coordination modulation effect offered by the Se <superscript>IV</superscript> O <subscript>3</subscript> <superscript>2-</superscript> and the C <subscript>4</subscript> O <subscript>4</subscript> <superscript>2-</superscript> anions lead to the generation of new building blocks, [(MoO <subscript>2</subscript> S <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> (OH) <subscript>6</subscript> (C <subscript>4</subscript> O <subscript>4</subscript> ) (MoO <subscript>7</subscript> )] <superscript>4-</superscript> , and the discovery of a new family of clusters of increasing nuclearity and complexity.
